GeoMetallurgy Overview
Actlabs can prepare thin sections, polished thin sections and polished section and can do both transmitted and reflected light petrographic descriptions. In addition electron microprobe analyses and laser ablation high resoilution ICP/MS is also available.
Activation Laboratories is now equipped with a state-of-the-art MLA650F Mineral Liberation Analyser, bringing quantitative, automated mineralogy within reach of its clients. Quantitative mineralogy provides the means to address the following types of questions and issues:
For the Explorationist:
- Assisting in characterizing ore variability and ore typing.
- Determining the mineralogical hosts of elements of interest, whether they be valuable or deleterious. (E.g. How much Cu reports as various sulphide and oxide minerals?)
- Establishing the variability in mineral associations, natural grain sizes and other inherent rock- or ore- properties, thereby gaining early, value-added information on how they are likely to impact on processes of extraction and project economics.
For the Metallurgist:
- Evaluating and understanding product purity/quality issues and consequences for remedial actions.
- The ability to correctly diagnose, recognize and interpret the impact of mineralogy on performance.
- Diagnostic methods and the provision of evidence to identify and understand the reasons for plant losses.
- How to distinguish and correlate ore characteristics based on performance with ore characteristics based on natural variability within the deposit.
Other & Non-Mining Clients and Applications:
The techniques used in applied and quantitative mineralogy (XRD, SEM Inspection) can equally be employed in characterizing materials in other fields. Examples include:
- Materials Characterization
- Environmental Mineralogy
- Forensic Mineralogy
- Pharmaceuticals
- Aerosol and Dust Particulates
An extensive range of measurement and application options are available, along with tailored software and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) services to adapt and cater to the customers requirements .
With the Field Emission Gun (FEG) electron source and fast Bruker Silicon Drift X-ray Detectors, our MLA offers truly high-resolution mineralogical solutions, in keeping with our by-line of Quality and Innovation.
